Equipment Reviews: Fender: Eighty-Five


65-watt, 1 x 12" combo with channel switching and reverb. Effects loop, headphon
e jack. Great amp for small gigs. Killer clean tone. Good medium-gain distortion
on Lead channel suited toward Texas blues, country, and pop. Lead channel has con
trols for gain, volume, presence, and limiter (cool feature). The Clean channel h
as Bass, Middle, and Treble knobs, Volume knob, and Mid-Boost button.
Pros:
LOUD amp! Limiter on Lead channel works w/Gain knob to nail tones from SRV to Da
vid Gilmour. Cabinet-voiced headphone jack is convenient for practicing and recor
ding. Clean channel sounds awesome with effects pedals.

Cons:
Only one set of tone controls for both channels. A separate Lead EQ would have b
een nice. Also, not enough gain to get a thick, saturated overdriven lead tone fo
r rock solos. To compare apples to apples, the distortion sounds much thinner tha
n distortion
