We have been using an HP Pavilion ZD7000 since 2001.
17" screen, numerical keypad
Intel P4 3.06 GHz
1024 MB RAM
Fujitsu MHJ 3060HD
XP Pro SP2 Initial install still good. Frequent use on internet and email in addition to Saw Studio, Vegas, DVD Architect. some home networking when back at studio.
Up to 8 tracks on internal HD
Up to 24 tracks on USB External HD.
Simultaneous 2 track recording to HHB Burnit CD
Earlier we used USB and firewire combo HDs which became corrupted. Drive hardware ok after reformat. Since avoiding firewire connections, no further drive corruption problems.
Approx 48 concert recordings per year.
Usually back up drives as soon as we return to studio. We should backup on location, but don't. Ideal setup would be raid level 5, 4 drive USB pack.

I've used a Toshiba Satellite Centrino 1.6G with 512M Ram and 60G HD. I use a RME Multiface and Behringer ADA8000 for 16 I/O. I record to a Maxtor external USB2 drive. No problems with the setup.

I have been using a Dell c840 2.6 ghz laptop with two RME Digiface cards and six Behringer ADA8000's to get 48 inputs (and outputs by the way!).
I have an HP Z8800 series 3.6 ghz laptop that has two card slots (most of them don't however) that I use as well.
I use a Universal External Laptop Battery model B-5760 for the laptop and a Universal External High Cap 20Ah Battery for laptop from http://stores.ebay.com/battery-street-Inc to power the RME's
The batteries totally eliminate any power line noise when using the adat connectors from the Behringers.
You can find the Dell c840's on ebay for $250 - $400 depending on condition (corporate lease returns and refurbs)

They have memory sticks that allow you to double the standard Dell configuration and hard drives up to 250 gig with XP loaded. I actually have one drive that has only SAC, SAW and a few plugins on it and a separate drive that I have for internet etc. that I swap-out when I just have to get on the internet![]()
I have been using these for rehearsals and concerts all summer with great results. Mains on one laptop and seperate controls for monitors on the satelites.
SAC is amazing. Then when you get ready to start recording the link up between SAC and SAWStudio is outrageous.

I have run 17 channels for recording no problem with SAC for FOH/monitors prior to Bob's update with SAW/SAW hooks. It will run better now. I ran this for 14 hours straight with no problems. This presented very little CPU load. I transfer recordings onto my studio PC for mixing and post production. FWIW, I looked seriously at SSL Alpha-Link/MADI interfaces but decided on the RME due to flexibility, overall costs and proven ability in the field. I may still go down that road at some point.

I have tested SAWStudio and SAC with:
M'Audio Profire Lightbridge / Profire 2626 / FW 1814 / Fast Track Pro (USB)
and JamLab (USB) all work flawless with a few of Bobs tweaks and custom
profiles.
I also have a 5 year old HP with firewire / 2.4 G P4 / 1G Ram / 80 G HD and
it still does a respectable job of using all the above.

Works great except the very last time I used it I glitched a 20-track recording by playing with a SAW channel compressor near the end of the show. Silly me. I later learned that I was probably getting low disc throughput with so little space left on the drive. Also -- a couple days a go I decided to defrag the drive for the first time ever. Duh

You should check the drive specs... is it a 7200 rpm drive? In many cases the laptop default drives are 4200 or 5400... the difference in sustained record performance can be drastic.

I have been using the RME Cardbus, Digiface, Octamic, and up to two ADA8000.
Even though the internal drive is slow, as we have gained confidence we now go up to 13 tracks without external drive. Typically we record three consecutive concerts before returning the laptop to the studio for file transfer o desktop drives over the studio network. We then offload and purge old files, and defrag before going out on next remote.
Once when I forgot to turn off virus scan software, automatic scan started, and recording got glitched. Luckily that was a rehearsal.
