Hi everybody, Chris Mickle here. It's been a long while since I've been here but good to be back, if only briefly. I have a comment about one of the posts...this is an area in which I have way, way too much experience and knowleged...Audioastronomer mentions that:
"My point being that 90 minutes of 8 tracks at 512 samples on osx 10.2 (released 4 years ago btw) is not that bad, and certainly not horrifyingly worse than what could be done with saw 4 years ago.
... but "back then" the bottleneck wasn't software, it was drivers and OS."
I agree that 90mins of 8 tracks into PT was not that bad back then, but the rest could not be more wrong.
Saw Studio 6 (or more) years ago was capbable of laying down 48 tracks onto one single large IDE drive after Bob engineered his way around the windows IDE bottleneck - he fixed it in his software. I would simply switch to a different IDE drives each set. This was much to my chagrin because in the meanwhile I had invested a huge amount of money in fibre channel in my recording trucks to do the same thing, only to have the fc setup fall short of the disk i/o that Studio was achieving after Bob's breakthrough.
I'm here today to tell you in no uncertain terms that way back then Studio was ripping past ANY other DAW for live recording and I had the distinct pleasure of being in a position to provide feedback to Bob which (I hope) helped this to happen.
The last major DVD I recorded was Bad Company in Denver and LA. After the shows I sent out the disks to one of the band's engineers who was using Sara McGlochlin's (sp?) studio up north. I actually had to re-configure the tracks because the PT rig up there was not capable of dealing with the number or size of the track files. That was only about 4 years ago.
"And of course, none of this matters if the guy has no clue how to operate his system, which isn't uncommon at all despite skill with the audio itself."
