Logic 5.5 for Windows
Logic 5.5 was the last version released for Windows. Ironically, it is a much better performer than Apple seems willing to admit. In its much-ballyhooed demonstration of Logic versus Cubase at the June 2003 introduction of the Power Mac G5, Apple showed that Logic running on a 1.6 GHz Power Mac G5 can support up to 52 simultaneous tracks (22 of which were visible in Apple's tests), each with five plug-ins activated.
Audio Buyer's Guide duplicated Apple's tests on a HP ZT1175 portable PC running Logic 5.5 under Windows XP with Service Pack 1. The machine was configured with 256MB of RAM and a 1.4GHz Mobile Pentium 4. Several other tasks, including Norton AntiVirus 2002 anti-virus software and YzDock, a "Dock" for Windows, were left running in the background.
We created 22, then 44, then 66 stereo audio tracks, imported 44.1K stereo samples into each track, then applied the Apple-documented effects (Fat EQ, Autofilter, Chorus, Silver Compressor) to each track. We got all the way up to 66 tracks before seeing a "CPU overload or disk too slow" message. (The 1.6 GHz PowerMac G5, according to Apple, tops out at 52 tracks.) In short, there appears to be something fishy about Apple's tests. The notoriously poor performing Cubase SX was, it seems, little more than a red herring, designed to make the PC look especially bad. Testing Cubase SX on both platforms or, as we have done, Logic on both platforms, is a more meaningful benchmark.
So, why was the Windows version discontinued? In July 2002, Cupertino, CA-based Apple Computer acquired Emagic. The company, which continues its operations as a subsidiary of Apple, discontinued its Windows-based products on Sept. 30, 2002 to focus exclusively on Mac-based products. Why? To sell more Macs, of course. During the second half of 2002, a free crossgrade was offered to owners of the Windows version as an incentive for switching to the Macintosh release of Logic 5.2 -- however, this offer is no longer available. Version 5.5 was the last version released for Windows. Fortunately, it's fully compatible with all current versions of Windows.
